Hallo vrienden!

Now for the topic of Zwarte Piet. This tradition is very strange for Americans to understand. Something like this would upset a large number of people in our country. We have a very sensitive past when dealing with Blacks and even the smallest mention of discrimination could send someone to jail. However, I understand that this is a long standing tradition in your country and it is not hard to see why Dutch people would want to continue the tradition. I'm not sure if racism has been a large part of Netherlands' history, but in America, it has. Since racism and discrimination is so heavily frowned upon here, it is very surprising to see something like this still present in society. Yes the tradition could be found offensive by some people, it is a very old tradition in your country and that also too should be respected. I believe there are ways to alter this tradition to be less directly offensive to Blacks. This way Dutch people could still keep their tradition and it might be more enjoyable for Blacks. My question for you is, what subjects to you learn in school and do you get to choose what subjects you take in school?
