America AJ Blair

Hi! My name is AJ Blair. I'm a freshman at the University of Michigan. I am from Farmington Hills, MI, which is near Detroit. I like sports a lot; in high school I played softball and volleyball. I enjoy movies and TV a lot, and I love to travel.
I think the Zwarte Piet tradition is very racist. In my opinion, dressing white people up in "black face" is insulting to black people. When I saw a video about this tradition, it made me upset and I felt bad for the black people in Amsterdam who had to look at white people dressed as slaves. Some people claim that the "black face" is actually ash from delivering all the presents to the children. But, if that is the case, why do they put an afro on the piets and why do they draw big lips on the piets? By doing this, you're just encouraging racial stereotypes.  Although I understand that Zwarte Piet is a tradition, from an American perspective, it seems racist. I would suggest keeping the tradition of Zwarte Piet but not putting the people in full "black face", instead, just put a small amount of black paint on their faces.
This is an article I read about the Zwarte Piet tradition: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/12/06/zwarte-piet-black-pete-christmas-dutch-netherlands_n_2249412.html

This is sort of random, but I was just wondering what types of animals you have in the Netherlands? And also what do you think about America/Americans? Be honest.

This is a picture of me at prom. I'm on the far right in the turquoise blue dress.
This is me on the back of my friend. We were dressed like this to go to an football game.

This is an American River Otter. It's my favorite animal.

This is a dolphin kissing me.

Follow that link and you'll see a video of squirrels. They run all over the campus and are very fat because people always feed them.
